Ahh.. my first SMS spam, complete with the misspelling and everything! I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when I called and the guy barely spoke English. I asked to speak to his supervisor, who almost sounded like the first guy. He assured me that he was not the same guy – I couldn’t really tell. Anyway, I asked them where they got my phone number to send the text message, and he told me that “I was one of the lucky people selected to win a free satellite system… blah blah…” I asked him where he got my number. He told me that it was part of a list of numbers that they purchased. I hounded him for more information and it was going nowhere. He then told me that if I gave him my number he could put me on the Do Not Call list. Figuring that it would be better than nothing, I gave it to him. He then asked me for my name. I asked him why he needed my name if he never even had it to begin with. He said that was the way that DNC lists worked. I gave him a fake name… yea, good thinking Pablo! He then said with a chuckle that “somebody will be calling you from our customer service department with an offer”… I got REALLY pissed off and told him that I gave him that info so that they would take me off the list. He continued to laugh and tell me the same thing – I told him that if somebody called me I would contact the Better Business Bureau and he said “that really scares me!”. I almost lost it! I decided to stay calm and ask why he was being such a jerk. He then asked me “if I have any interest in satellite systems” to which I told him to go to hell and hung up on him. Can’t quite get the same effect as slamming the old-school phones down, ehh?
Anyway – I think I’ve shot myself in the foot with my investigative work. Now they know I got the SMS *and* which number I’m using, even if the name isn’t real. Great – I suppose I get to look forward to more of these. I did notify the owners of Crookedstill.com that somebody was using their domain name to send SMS spam – it’ll be interesting to see their response. I also called T-Mobile to see what they were doing to combat SMS spam. Their answer? NOTHING! They said that they can not control incoming text messages to my cell phone! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised! But what if I get a deluge of SMS spams and it puts me over my SMS limit? T-Mobile charges me for unsolicited messages?! Ridiculous!
Hopefully it won’t get bad… but it will only take time. The T-Mobile rep said that he could change my phone number – fan-friggin-tastic…
Anybody out there have any other ideas how to deal with this? What are my options?!
uggh…

I got that SMS today too, but with a different name at the end. I didn’t call back, but trust me that I would be asking T mobile to take the spam off of my bill!
Um.. yeah. I hate to say it (and not like you don’t already know), but giving him your number was the worst idea possible. Which is not to say that I never fell for the old “respond to this email to remove your address from our database”, so SPAM companies could verify addresses.
Sigh. What a waste of our time.
If it makes you feel better, I have gotten 4 calls here at work that seem to be from a fax machine.
I tracked them down, so hopefully the calls will stop.
Sorry BJ, that was me calling you with my mermaid voice.
Pablo, That was me texting you. You actually were talking to a co-worker. I didn’t think you were actually going to fall for it. We still have a great satalite system available for you. See you at the game today.
here is the do not call list

Hi, today i received a SMS Spam from the very same phone number but saying i won a Complete Vacation Plus TravelCash… following a phone call from the same number a few days ago…don’t know what that means but i have no intention to contact them and get in their little game…Funny thing I am in Montreal so that seems to spread everywhere. Thank you anyway. Will certainly report them if that continues.
i recieved one a few minutes ago from the same 866 number , but they told me i won a cruise to the bahamas plus travel cash ( $1000 ) . i called the number and this suspicious answering service told me i had the wrong number . so i looked the number up on yahoo and found this site . i called from a friends phone , so hopefully they didn’t track the number . this is ridiculous .
I just got the same TravelCash Bahamas spam text message about 5 different times on my cell phone, and looked up the number and found your site, Pablo. I’m about to get Cingular to take texting off my service if they can’t freakin’ control incoming text messages. If a phone company can block incoming CALLS why can’t they block incoming TEXTS that come from PHONES????? I don’t get it. But I’ll definitely be asking Cingular not to charge me for spam text messages.
Thanks for putting this info up so those of us who have never experienced this before can understand what the heck just happened to us. Technology is not always helpful.
Yep, got the bahama spam, searched for number, I’m like everyone else here.. filed a complaint w/ fcc and emailed a tirade to cingular..
